Digest Fats Easier | Tips for Keto with no Gallbladder- Thomas DeLauer. In this video, Thomas will provide some simple and specific things that you can do to make the digestion of fats easier with or without a gallbladder. Study – Journal of the American Gastroenterological Association:

The main role of the gallbladder is to store bile, and in turn, the role of bile is to digest fat – people assume eating a lot of fat is somehow linked to an increased risk of gallstones, which are solid deposits of cholesterol and bile that can form in the gallbladder. Most of the cholesterol in the bloodstream is made inside the body (as part of a tightly regulated process inside the liver), not derived from the diet.
None of the common causes of gallstones (including inherited body chemistry, body weight, low gallbladder motility, and low-calorie diet) are linked to the keto diet.

A meta-analysis compared those who lost weight on a low-fat diet versus a low-carb diet and found that those on the low-fat diet were more at risk of developing gallstones, with those on a high fat diet having a reduced number of gallstones. Additionally, eating high fat is thought to stimulate gallbladder emptying, which could be even protective against stone formation. In other words, it is possible to follow your original diet after gallbladder surgery. However, you may have to make adjustments before your body can adapt to fat digestion:

Keto without a Gallbladder- Slowly Increase Fat Intake:
It’s typically recommended that you avoid very high-fat and low-fiber meals right after surgery as if you ingest a lot of fat with a small amount of fiber in one sitting, then you are much more likely to experience diarrhea or indigestion, but most people return to a regular diet within a month after surgery. You need to take a much slower approach to the keto transition than most people would.

Ideally, slowly increase your fat intake and eat smaller meals on a more frequent basis until your body adapts to higher fat meals, then see how your body reacts before adding additional fats to another meal. If your stools don’t change much, you can try adding a little bit more fat to your meals the following day.

Pair Fats with Soluble Fiber:
When you add more fats to your meals and you notice your stools becoming greasy or oily, there’s a good chance your body is unable to digest all the fats you’re eating. Pair soluble fiber with your meals as soluble fiber attracts water and turns to gel during digestion, which slows digestion – pulls water into the digestion process and essentially turns it into a gel-like substance to help your body break down food and fat properly.

Eat Foods that Increase Secretion of Bile:
The more bile your liver produces, the easier time your body will have breaking down your additional fat intake.

Artichokes- Artichokes stimulate bile production in the liver and increase its flow into the intestines. A study published in the journal Phytomedicine looked at the effect artichoke extract vs placebo had on bile secretion in 20 people. Researchers found that in the artichoke group: after 30 minutes after the test-substance was administered there was a 127.3% increase in bile secretion was recorded, after 60 minutes, 151.5%, and after another 60 minutes, 94.3%. The highest increase in the case of the placebo (139.5%) was seen after 30 minutes (1)

Ginger (and lemon)- Ginger stimulates the secretion of gastric juices like hydrochloric (HCL) acid and bile – it has also been shown to inhibit inflammation of liver tissue aiding in the removal of toxins;

ACV- Apple cider vinegar contains malic acid which can help thin bile for efficient flow from the liver – allows for more bile production and bile flow, resulting in easier fat digestion.

Keto Diet vs. Paleo Diet: Which Diet is Healthiest for You- Thomas DeLauer… The idea behind the Paleolithic diet is to replicate the ways that our ancestors ate; ancestors could only hunt and gather – had little access to grains and no access to processed foods. The ketogenic diet is designed to completely alter your internal state, a state in which your body burns fat. The Keto diet was originally developed for disease management and to this day is being used for conditions such as epilepsy.
So, a paleo diet, just like a keto diet, focuses on getting fat and protein as a primary source of energy. However, the big difference is paleo doesn’t avoid carbs. While both diets came about for different reasons, they are both used (mainstream-ly) as effective tools for weight loss.

Similarities – Health Benefits

In addition to noticeable weight loss effects, collective studies from the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Journal of Internal Medicine, The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, and the New England Journal of Medicine have found that both Paleo and Keto diets are effective at reducing triglycerides, blood pressure, blood sugar and insulin levels (1,2,3,4)
Despite providing similar health benefits, they do have some key differences.

Key Differences:
Carbs, Fats and Glucose- The main difference is that a Keto diet is truly low carb, whereas a Paleo diet is not necessarily low carb – paleo relies on glucose and keto relies on ketones
A keto diet requires you to adhere to a strict macronutrient ratio (75% fat, 20% protein, 5% carb) The paleo diet still utilizes glucose for much of its energy so carbs are still a big part of the diet. In order to be in ketosis and utilize ketones, your body needs to be starved of glucose, which results in the body burning fatty acids that produce ketones; an alternative source of energy to glucose. Ketosis is a state that you have to achieve, paleo is about avoiding certain food groups. So a paleo diet is a little more forgiving as having too much of one macro or another won’t kick you out of a metabolic state, unlike keto.

Dairy:
The Paleo diet removes foods that are hard for the body to break down and can wreak havoc on gut health — dairy products are one of them. Keto dieters often eat dairy products because they’re high in fats while also being low in carbohydrates.

Artificial Sweeteners/Food Quality:
The Paleo diet cuts out most processed food, especially ones with artificial sweeteners and additives – focuses strongly on choosing whole foods that are nutrient-dense, high-quality, and free from toxins. However, on the Keto diet the only requirements are that your food is low-carb/high fat. This means diet soda is technically Keto approved and so are other artificially sweetened low-carb junk foods – Although a healthy Keto diet should also include high quality food, it isn’t the emphasis. Summed as short as possible – No processed foods vs no carbs (5)

Paleo and CrossFit:
Carbs are staples for CrossFit and athletes, but they are somewhat restricted in the Paleo diet. The Paleo diet also eliminates grains and legumes (both key carb sources for athletes), as well as dairy, salt, and vegetable oils. Carbs that are allowed on the paleo diet (no grains, for example) are too low on the glycemic index to replace glycogen mid- and post-run as quickly as endurance athletes typically need. You’re not low enough on carbs to be producing ketones so you’re not using fat as a main source of energy, and not high enough on carbs to be receiving enough energy from them (6)

JILLIAN MICHAELS: Aging is a subject matter that for no good reason seems to be shrouded in all kinds of mystery. And the reality is that there is nothing in our genes that tells us to age or tells us to die. So we naturally have to ask then why do we? And it appears that there are six hallmarks of aging, six body processes that are responsible for how we age and they can work for us or they can work against us. And how we live is what determines the outcome of those results.

So the first key, this is kind of how we’ve listed them, myself and my cool author Myatt Murphy who is fantastic, is stress, stress adaptation. So when we think of stress we often think stress is evil, stress is the devil, it’s so bad, but in reality stress is designed to make us stronger, whether it’s emotionally or physically, like we can be literal here. Somebody has osteoporosis or osteopenia, their bone density is becoming compromised with old age. Well, why do we recommend working out, in particular with weights? The idea is that stress is an injury, we’re injuring the muscles, we’re enjoying the bones, stress with regard to fitness in this particular case, and it creates these little micro fissures in the bone. Well of the body, we jump to our second key, which is inflammation, has an inflammatory response, sends in bone cells and says all right whoa we’ve got to heal this, we’ve got to get all this back together. The bone remodels and becomes more dense. So again, stress when properly managed, be it emotional or physical, is designed to either make you wiser, smarter, stronger, more depth, more empathy or your bones become more dense, your muscles become leaner and stronger.

And when you look at all of the amazing things that our body does to adapt to stress you see that it’s there to make you better. The second being inflammation. So without inflammation you couldn’t cure the common cold. However, when information becomes chronic, just like stress you’ve got this little army of white blood cells are like we’ve got to go to war with somebody, well when the key of inflammation becomes ongoing and chronic it starts to attack healthy tissue. This is when you get into issues like rheumatoid arthritis, for example, a perfect example. Another big one is metabolism.

We’re looking at a body process in particular called autophagy. So autophagy is really where our body goes in and culls dead cells. It’s like the garbage trucks come in, they break down the old and they rebuild the new. When we’re eating constantly, so food timing is very important, and not only that but how much we eat is very important. So when we consume food we’ve got to break it down, we oxidize the food, which creates oxidative stress. So okay the less food we eat, within reason we’re not trying to starve ourselves, but we also don’t want to eat too much food and we put this in a place of what I call calorie restriction. So calorie surplus you’re at a healthy weight and you’re eating more than you burn in a day, that’s too much food we need to restrict that and match calories in with calories out so it’s the simple law of thermodynamics.
